The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment is actively engaged in conducting a strategic survey research program that includes participation in nationally developed survey projects and the development and administration of locally developed survey instruments. These survey activities are part of the College’s commitment to institutional effectiveness, planning and improvement.
The OIRA maintains a calendar of survey activity. It is possible that the office may suggest alternate survey dates in order to limit the number of active survey invitations to students. The OIRA regards the confidentiality of survey data to be of utmost importance.
Responses to anonymous surveys cannot be traced back to the respondent. No personally identifiable information is captured unless you voluntarily offer personal or contact information in any of the comment fields. Additionally, responses are combined with those of many others and reported in aggregate format to further protect your anonymity.

Admitted Student Questionnaire (ASQ)
The admitted student questionnaire asks admitted students what they think of their majors, recruitment literature, financial aid packages, competition and more. The College Board evaluates and compiles the results into detailed reports that help the College determine what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong.
Alumni One Year Out
The survey assesses alumni one year after graduation. It describes employment, post-baccalaureate education, perceptions of academic standards, quality of education and experiences at Hood.
Alumni Five Years Out
The survey gives graduates an opportunity to evaluate their experiences and perceptions of the academic standards, quality of education and the role of Hood College in their academic life after five years of "out in the world" experience.
Bachelor Degree Recipients Survey (BDR)
This survey is administered to graduating seniors to know their graduate school and employment plans.
CIRP Freshman Survey
This survey is part of a national study of higher education conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). One major goal of this research is to determine what happens to students when they attend college. It measures attitudes, values and life goals. The results assist in enriching college experience during the next four years. Results are compared with the responses of students nationwide.
CIRP College Senior Survey (CSS)
This survey is designed as an exit survey for graduating seniors. It is conducted by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) at UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). It focuses on measuring college outcomes and post-college goals and plans, including academic achievement and engagement, student-faculty interaction, cognitive and affective development, student goals and values, satisfaction with the college experience, degree aspirations and career plans and post-college plans. The data collected in this survey can be tied to the data collected in the freshman survey to measure improvement.
HERI Faculty Survey
This survey collects information about the experiences of faculty across the nation and is reported in a publication by HERI and in the media such as the Chronicle of Higher Education. The data tells us important information about faculty satisfaction, goals and activities. Results provide our institution with a means of charting our progress and providing a way to identify areas in need of improvement.
In addition to helping Hood, the survey research will be combined with those from hundreds of institutions in the United States as part of a national research project that examines faculty.
Graduate Student Survey
The survey was created in fall 2009. It is designed to collect benchmark information that will help the graduate school assess current programs and provide guidance for future resource allocation, course delivery options and student events.
Graduate Alumni Survey
The survey collects demographic and academic characteristics, employment and income, quality of education, academic support and professional preparation, all of which are the basis for long-term planning and program improvement.
National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
This is an important part of assessing aspects of student experience that are consistent with good practice in undergraduate education. The survey provides a snapshot of student engagement in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results help institutions look holistically at undergraduate experience, identify strengths and weaknesses of educational programs and focus their efforts to promote student learning and success.
Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI)
Offered through Noel-Levitz, the SSI is administered to all undergraduate, degree-seeking students. It assesses the satisfaction with the importance levels that students place on various services, programs and experiences.
